He is a global sustainable travel pioneer whose career spans the intersection of hospitality, conservation, and sustainability. He is the former National Geographic senior director for sustainability and an award-winning travel editor and columnist. Costas was tapped by the United Nations to help establish the world’s first global criteria defining sustainable tourism best practices. He was recognized with legendary conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall and renowned ocean explorer, Dr. Sylvia Earle, for his life’s work to save nature. In 2023, Costas was inducted as a National Fellow of The Explorer’s Club. His numerous publications include lead author of The Big Sur Destination Stewardship Plan; co-author of Transformational Opportunities for People, Ocean, Planet; Transboundary Conservation: A New Vision for Protected Areas; and Wilderness: Earth’s Last Wild Places. Costas has served as a sustainability consultant to some of the world’s most celebrated luxury hospitality brands. He has earned numerous international awards and recognitions, establishing him as a global expert in integrating hospitality, conservation, and community social and economic well-being.
